Shearer hoping for big things from one Everton man
For a long time there has been huge hope and expectations placed in and on young Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The 22-year-old was probably put under too much pressure to be the goalscoring answer at Goodison Park after Romelu Lukaku’s departure in 2017.
Recently, though, he has begun fulfil those massive boots, and he now has 10 goals in all competitions so far this season.
Even the Premier League’s all time record goalscorer, Alan Shearer, believes that big things are now on the horizon for the young striker.
“That was the question mark – will he score enough goals?” he told BBC Sport. “What he’ll have to continue to do is train, train train; finish, finish, finish.
“I think there’s a really, really good player in there.”

This is hugely encouraging for Shearer. He’s right that there was never any doubt about the work ethic or the all round game of Calvert-Lewin.
The big question was always: can he regularly score goals at Premier League level?
This season, he has begun to answer that question in emphatic fashion. 10 goals isn’t world-beating form, but it’s a very encouraging step forward for him.
He’s going to need to keep doing this season after season to become the true solution up front at Goodison Park, but the signs are now there that he’s heading in the right direction.
