Whelan destroys one Everton player after Liverpool embarrassment
There was barely an Everton player who emerged from Sunday’s embarrassing 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool with any credit.
In fact, it was quite the opposite. The Toffees supporters were left fuming with the pitiful effort offered up by their first team against the Reds’ kids.
The centre of midfield was one of the areas most vehemently targeted by fans, with Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson one of those most culpable for the loss.
That’s certainly the view of former Premier League striker Noel Whelan, anyway, who has torn into the former Tottenham Hotspur man.
“You get given your opportunity [and] if you don’t take it, see you later,” he told Football Insider.
“It is what it is, he’s not hit the heights of what everyone expected at Everton, he’s actually done nothing at Everton really.
“So now is the time where Ancelotti has seen enough if someone wants to take him on, fantastic, but I don’t think there’ll be a queue of people to take him on, he’s not done enough.”
Goodison News’ View
It’s hard to argue with Whelan’s verdict, to be honest. Sigurdsson has had streaks of good form and flashes of top class talent, but it’s been few and far between overall.
He’s simply not been consistent at Goodison Park and, considering the money the Toffees spent on him, that’s simply inexcusable.
So it would come as no surprise if Ancelotti began looking to shift him out of Merseyside in order to generate funds to improve his squad.
In other Everton news, the club are reported to be in the race for a Ligue 1 starlet who is heavily in demand.
