Report: Everton chasing Roma midfielder

Everton need some help in central midfield. That was evident in the immediate aftermath of Andre Gomes’ shocking injury, and it’s even more clear now.

The Toffees were given the runaround in the middle of the park by Liverpool’s kids on Sunday, leaving new manager Carlo Ancelotti with much to ponder.

It appears that the Italian has decided to act this month. Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Tuesday that Everton are one of two Premier League teams chasing Roma midfielder Steven NZonzi.

The French international is currently out on loan at Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray, but there is thought to be a way out of that deal if required.

West Ham United are the other top flight side tracking the former Blackburn Rovers star, who hasn’t been seen in England since his spell with Stoke City ended four-and-a-half years ago.

After that the 31-year-old enjoyed a very successful stint at Sevilla before making the move to the Italian capital.

It’s clear that the Toffees need some additions in the middle of the park. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Morgan Schneiderlin were exposed on Sunday, while Fabian Delph has struggled with injuries this season.

Tom Davies is a good young midfielder, but he needs some help. Nzonzi would bring significant experience and defensive solidity alongside the all-action youngster.

However, he is 31 years of age now, so this would need to be a cheap deal for it to make sense for Ancelotti. But if he can get him for £5million or less, perhaps, then it’d be a risk worth taking.
