Report: Everton defender set for move away

The Everton Under-23s have been one of the best teams in the country for some time now, enjoying much success in the Premier League 2 competition.

One of the stars of that recent run for the young Toffees has been central defender Lewis Gibson.

Now, though, it appears that the 19-year-old will be heading elsewhere for the next stage of his development.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported on Friday that League One promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town are close to signing Gibson on loan until the end of the season.

The Englishman moved to Merseyside from his hometown club Newcastle United for a whopping £6million in 2017, but has found first team chances hard to come by as of yet.

The teenager is in the final six months of his current contract, but it’s understood that discussions over a new deal are ongoing.

Dutch heavyweights Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar are thought to be interested in his services, as are several German teams. First, though, it looks like a trip to Suffolk.

Everton have benefitted from their young starlets going to Portman Road several times before. Indeed, they already have Luke Garbutt on the books with Paul Lambert’s side.

The Tractor Boys are looking to get that turned into a permanent switch, while it’s thought that Gibson’s new contract would have to be agreed before he went anywhere.

But this would be a great move for the youngster. He needs first team football, and Ipswich should be able to provide him with that in a high stakes environment.
