Report: Everton eyeing Newcastle goalkeeper

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti spent a fair bit of time in his pre match press conference on Friday assuring journalists that he wasn’t after a new goalkeeper.

However, the inconsistency of current number one Jordan Pickford makes that seem slightly incongruous.

So too does the fact that the club are continually being linked with goalkeepers. Some of that will be nonsense, of course, but there’s no smoke without fire.

The latest instance of that came on Friday when The Chronicle reported that the Toffees are admirers of young Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a tremendous season on loan in the Championship with Swansea City.

He’s expected to want first team football when he returns to St James’ Park at the end of the campaign, something they may not be able to offer him.

Tottenham Hotspur join the Toffees in holding an interest in the Englishman, as do the Swans themselves.

This is an interesting one. You wouldn’t have thought that, were Ancelotti to replace Pickford, he’d do it with a relatively unproven ‘keeper.

However, Woodman has been highly rated for some time now and has enjoyed a tremendous campaign in Wales.

If he arrived he’d probably compete with Pickford and perhaps eventually usurp him, but Ancelotti may be targeting a more established shot-stopper.
