talkSPORT pundit condemns Everton player

Last Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool was embarrassing for Everton for all sorts of reasons, and the supporters certainly weren’t happy.

They made their objections known in the stadium and at the club’s Finch Farm training ground in the days that followed.

What players can’t do, though, is get involved when fans rip into them. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Toffees midfielder Fabian Delph did following the loss.

talkSPORT pundit and former Scotland international Chris Iwelumo feels that the 30-year-old made a mistake, there.

“I don’t see any benefits from retaliating or giving that fan what he wants: to even show that he’s got a rise or he’s got under the skin,” he said on talkSPORT.

“Don’t give anyone the satisfaction that they’ve got under your skin. You have a responsibility… to not react.

“I’m a little bit embarrassed. I understand why he’s reacted – because he’s upset, it’s a big game, he’s probably disappointed with his own performance – the worst thing to do is to go onto social media and look at replies anyway after a poor performance.

“I’m just disappointed that he’s reacted.”

It’s hard to argue with what Iwelumo is saying, here. Delph shouldn’t have responded to the Toffees supporters, that’s the long and short of it.

He probably shouldn’t have even gone on social media after the game, but it’s likely hard to ignore when he’s getting constant notifications and mentions on his phone.

But you have to rise above all that. The fans had a right to be angry after the defeat last weekend, but as a player you simply have to ignore the noise.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are reportedly admirers of a Bournemouth defender with a long list of admirers.
