Charlie Nicholas raves over one Everton star

There’s no doubt that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been – along with defender Mason Holgate – one of the stars of the season for Everton.

The 22-year-old has taken his game to the next level this campaign, keeping the same excellence of his overall play and combining it with a much more lethal touch in front of goal.

Indeed, the Englishman now has 12 goals this term, and he now looks to be establishing a fine partnership with young Moise Kean in the Toffees attack.

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has been hugely impressed by Calvert-Lewin, although he doesn’t think he’ll be able to help the Blues past Watford on Saturday, tipping the Hornets for a 2-1 victory.

“This is another belter. Everton are sitting pretty in 12th on 30 points. If Watford win, they close the gap to four points. I have done enough of Everton this season, and I still cannot work them out,” he wrote on the Sky Sports website.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been brilliant, their best player by a mile, but I do not get the midfield or the balance at the back. Bernard can be taken off after 45 or 60 minutes – he creates stuff, but he just does not score.

“I am so unsure of them and cannot make them out. Watford’s honesty is probably going to get them over the line here.”

Is Nicholas right about Everton?

He’s right that they are hard to figure out, that’s for sure. They should have cruised to victory against Newcastle United last time out, yet they somehow contrived to concede two stoppage time goals.

They are unpredictable, but amid all the inconsistency Calvert-Lewin has shone. He’s become a goalscorer now, not just a hard-worker.

Watford away is certainly winnable for the Toffees, but the hosts have been in good form under Nigel Pearson. Still, unlike Nicholas, you’d have to favour the Blues.
