Report – Everton set to offer 23y/o new Goodison deal
Everton are set to offer Mason Holgate a new contract at Goodison Park, according to the Telegraph.
The report suggests that Carlo Ancelotti is keen to reward the defender’s impressive form of late by handing him an extension to his current deal on Merseyside.
The 23-year-old has established himself as a first choice pick at the heart of defence under the Italian, who has been won over by his eye-catching display.
Holgate’s current deal with the Toffees is set to expire in 2022, but he was the subject of interest from elsewhere last month, with Football Insider reporting that Everton rejected two bids for him from unnamed Premier League sides.
Does Holgate deserve a new deal?
Without a shadow of a doubt, yes.
The centre-back has been a revelation this season, and he has brilliantly filled the void left after Kurt Zouma’s return to Chelsea following the expiration of his loan spell.
Holgate has averaged 4.94 interceptions and 3.06 clearances per games so far this season, as per Wyscout, as well as winning 4.51 aerial duels and 7.69 defensive battles.
In short, he has been a rock at the heart of defence, and to have a young English player of his talent and potential, it would be a sin to not try and tie him down for as long as possible.
The Toffees could end up building something really special under Ancelotti, and there’s no reason why Holgate couldn’t be a prominent member of that process.
