Bent: Everton star could make England’s Euro 2020 squad
Everton, like most Premier League teams, will likely have plenty of first team players representing their countries at Euro 2020 this summer.
The Toffees, though, likely wouldn’t have expected too many of their players to be wearing the Three Lions of England.
Jordan Pickford is a certainty to go, of course, but who else? Fabian Delph looked a good shout at one point, but likely no longer.
Now, the focus has shifted to centre back Mason Holgate and, increasingly, star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Former England international Darren Bent certainly feels that the 22-year-old is knocking on the door of Gareth Southgate’s squad.
“The one you’d have to say is in good form is Calvert-Lewin, he’s got five in his last 10,” he said on talkSPORT.
“Whenever I talk about Calvert-Lewin people laugh it off, which I think is totally disrespectful.
“Anyone who’s watched him play for Everton… he’s fundamentally so good, he holds the ball up really well, he’s good in the air, he can score goals, he’s quick, he’s strong.
“You start looking at that – and I’m sure Gareth Southgate’s probably looked at that and thought… I reckon Calvert-Lewin’s a lot closer than people think.”
Is Bent right about this one?
You’d like to think so, wouldn’t you? Southgate would be a fool not to at least be considering Calvert-Lewin amid his sparkling run of recent form.
Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford are both out injured at the moment, so that gives someone like Calvert-Lewin an opening to work his way into the England manager’s plans.
He’s got 12 goals now this season, so he’s been good all campaign long. There’s no reason for anyone to dismiss his chances of making Southgate’s squad.
