Report: Everton have serious interest in Serie A winger
Everton have plenty of talented players in their squad, but if they’re going to break into the Premier League elite then they need more top quality.
Carlo Ancelotti’s ultimate aim as Toffees boss has to be getting into the top six and then the top four.
If they are to get themselves into a position to compete with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, then more quality is needed.
That will be the Italian – and Marcel Brands’ – task in the summer, and it will be fascinating to see what moves they make.
The Daily Express reported on Thursday night that the Toffees are one of several teams chasing a deal for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga.
Everton are said to be seriously interested in the former Chelsea man, although the London club do have a buy-back option, albeit one they are expected to turn into a sell-on fee clause.
Brighton & Hove Albion are thought to be leading the race for the 23-year-old – provided they stay up this season – while Inter Milan, Napoli and Barcelona are also in for the £15million-rated star.
Sassuolo turned down an enquiry from Brighton last month, and are looking to tie Boga down to a new contract.
Would Boga be a good signing for Everton?
He’s certainly enjoying a fine season in Serie A, that’s for sure. The former Blue has bagged seven goals and four assists in all competitions for Sassuolo.
He’s a talented player who has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, although he’s still relatively unproven.
You wonder whether Ancelotti would rather go after a more proven talent, especially with this many teams sniffing around Boga anyway.
Still, wingers with end product have been in short supply at Goodison Park this campaign, so Boga would represent an upgrade in that respect.
In other Everton news, a Scottish heavyweight is poised to make a second move to sign a Blues defender in the summer.
