Report: Ancelotti keen for Everton to win race for Ligue 1 midfielder

Everton have suffered in central midfield this season, there’s no doubt about that. Injuries and poor form has been a problem for the Toffees.

Andre Gomes is set to return imminently, but his fellow summer signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin remains sidelined.

That means that the spot next to the Portugal international will have to be filled by one of Gygli Sigurdsson, Morgan Schneiderlin, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies.

None of that group of players has been able to put together a consistent run of good form this campaign.

It would make sense for manager Carlo Ancelotti to be looking for reinforcements at the position, then.

Well, that’s exactly what he’s doing.

The Express reported on Saturday that the Italian is keen for his team to beat Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson.

It’s said that the Frenchman struck a deal with the Ligue 1 side when he extended his contract in December 2018 that he would be allowed to leave this summer.

Ancelotti has been interested in the 25-year-old since his Napoli days, but saw a January swoop for him blocked by Marseille.

Would Sanson be a good signing for Everton?

It’s one of those where you need to trust the manager’s judgement. If Ancelotti has been after Sanson for this long then he’s obviously a decent player.

Plenty of teams are also thought to be looking at him, though, so there’s no guarantee that he’ll end up at Goodison Park.

It would be nice if he did, though. He’s got four goals and four assists this campaign, and is a real jack-of-all-trades in midfield.

He’d form a quality partnership with Gomes, there’s no doubt about that. So if the Blues can get a deal done then happy days.

In other Everton news, the club are reportedly considering a summer swoop for a Napoli midfielder.
