Goodison News View: BBC pundit’s criticism shows room for improvement for Everton ace

There has been much talk recently about the monumental improvements made by Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season.

The 22-year-old has really come into his own this campaign, and is now surely on the verge of an England call-up.

The youngster found the back of the net once again against Arsenal on Sunday, making it 14 for the campaign in total.

However, he also missed a fair few gilt-edged chances to get the Toffees something from the game in their 3-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

He took his goal very well in the early goings with an acrobatic effort, but he needed to do better in the second half.

That’s certainly the view of former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks.

“Everton, on the other hand, should have got something out of this game when you consider their chances,” he wrote on the BBC Sport website on Monday.

“Most of them fell to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has been in blistering form recently. However, if Calvert-Lewin wants to be among the best strikers in the country, a return of one goal in five chances just won’t cut it.”

Crooks, although not always on the money, has hit the nail on the head here. Calvert-Lewin has the potential to be one of the Premier League’s top marksmen. To do so, he would do well to replicate the other star striker on the pitch on Sunday.

Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had two really good chances and he took them both. That’s the difference between very good and great.

Calvert-Lewin had five shots at the Emirates, with three of them finding the target and one of them going in. That’s not bad, but the misses were costly.

He’s still an extremely young man, so improvement is going to come, but Crooks is right to say that further progress is needed before he delivers on all of his potential.

In other Everton news, Toffees legend Nevile Southall has claimed that one player doesn’t look happy at the club.
