Report – Man City prioritise summer swoop for Everton first teamer

Manchester City have put Everton defender Mason Holgate at the top if their transfer wish list this summer, according to Football Insider

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful season at Goodison Park, and has established himself as a first team regular under both Marco Silva and Carlo Ancelotti.

So far this term he has made 20 appearances in the Premier League, and it is understood that his extended run in the side, coupled with an impressive upturn in form, has alerted the defending champions to him.

Pep Guardiola is understood to be in the market for a central defender this summer, and could look to replicate a similar kind of deal to the one that took John Stones to the Etihad in 2016.

For their part, Everton are keen to hang on to Holgate, and are believed to be eager on negotiating a contract extension with the player.

The defender’s current deal expires in 2022.

Should Everton sell Holgate?

Absolutely not.

Unless the fee is so astronomical that it can’t be ignored – and to be fair, that could be a factor when City come knocking – then there’s no reason why the Toffees should be looking to sell.

Holgate has been a revelation this season, averaging 4.48 aerial duels won, 4.93 interceptions made, and 7.62 successful defensive duels too, as per Wyscout.

In short, he has been rock steady at the back, and offloading him now, just as he is beginning to realise his full potential in the Premier League, makes very little sense.

If nothing else, he should be worth even more this time next year.
