‘Next in line’ – Paul Robinson makes major claim about Everton ace in hot form
Paul Robinson has claimed that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been reborn under new manager new Carlo Ancelotti.
The 22-year-old signed a new deal on Friday that will keep him on Merseyside until at least 2025, and has hit eight goals in 12 Premier League matches since the Italian took over at Goodison Park.
And Robinson has been so impressed by the forward that he has ever suggested an England call-up could be on the cards.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Players that had a lot to prove at Everton and they have really come to the fore.
“Holgate has found his feet at centre-half after his loan. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did not start the season well but he has been reformed completely under Ancelotti.
“Given England’s injury list he is the next in line and I would not be surprised to see Mason Holgate get a call-up either.”
Is Calvert-Lewin ready for England?
If we’re being honest, were Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford fit, Calvert-Lewin probably wouldn’t be having his name thrown about in relation to an England call-up.
That being said, his form has been stunning of late, and if he continues to thrive in the manner that he is, it’s going to become increasingly difficult for the Three Lions to ignore his progress.
Over the course of this season, Calvert-Lewin’s expected goals rating has shot up from 0.46 per game to 0.55 per game, as per Wyscout.
Moreover, his shots on target per game has risen from 2.25 to 2.6.
These may seem like incremental changes, but the fact that he has suddenly hit this purple patch in front of goal should be all the proof you need to recognise the importance of these improvements.
Calvert-Lewin is now playing like a striker who has learned his craft and who is a lot more confident in his ability to find the back of the net.
Does he still have improvements to make? Of course – as exemplified by his dreadful miss against Chelsea on Sunday – but if he continues to grow at this rate, it’s only a matter of time before he gets an international cap.
