Everton 25y/o admits that he wants to leave club this summer
Everton loanee Matthew Pennington has admitted that he would like to leave the Toffees on a permanent basis this summer.
The 25-year-old is currently at Hull City in the Championship – the seventh loan of his career so far.
And the defender has now openly admitted that he would like to move away from Goodison Park for good in an effort to further his career.
Speaking to Hull Live, he said: “I’ve got next season at Everton but hopefully I can get something sorted in the summer elsewhere. If not, we’ll just see what happens.
“I’m thinking I need a home in the summer, somewhere to put my roots down and crack on with my career.
“I’ve been on loan quite a lot now so I’m looking for that place to settle down and really push on with my career.”
Should Everton allow Pennington to leave this summer?
It’s always a bit of a red flag when a player reaches his mid-20s and has yet to make a proper, sustained impression on the first team picture.
Pennington finds himself in a similar situation to somebody like Luke Garbett, who has tried and failed on several occasions to convince a number of managers that he is ready to make the step up to Premier League life.
With that in mind, and considering this is his seventh loan deal, it’s probably safe to assume that he wouldn’t be missed too much if he were to engineer an exit at the end of the season.
Were he to go, however, the Toffees would no doubt have a number of potential suitors at Championship level.
So far this season, he has averaged 6.99 defensive duels won per game, 5.73 aerial duels, and 8.35 interceptions, as per Wyscout.
Those numbers illustrate a reliable, accomplished defender who has found his level, and who deserves a chance to set up shop somewhere else.
