Athletic report details Liverpool Mayor’s opinion on Everton hosting Merseyside derby
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson believes that Goodison Park should host the upcoming Merseyside derby.
There were concerns over fans congregating outside Everton’s stadium during the derby, although that didn’t change Anderson’s verdict.
As it stands, there is set to be a meeting on Monday afternoon to determine whether or not the game can go ahead at Everton’s ground.
The Premier League have already confirmed that the derby will take place on Sunday the 21st of June with a late-night kick-off.
Anderson commented on this, and gave his blessing for Goodison Park to host the derby with the Premier League about to restart.
“We have had the opportunity since then to speak to fans and the clubs have done their part and got the message across that the supporters need to stay away. Both clubs have made it clear,” he told the Athletic.
“So I would have no objection to the games being played at our clubs’ home grounds, both the derby at Goodison and Liverpool’s games at Anfield.”
A decision will be expected as early as Monday, with the Toffees surely eager just to get on the pitch and hit their fierce rivals hard.
Liverpool could win the title with a win should Arsenal beat Manchester City earlier that week, and Carlo Ancelotti will be keen to halt their progress, even if it’s just for one week.
Everton will just need to concentrate on matters on the pitch for now and let matters off the pitch conclude themselves.
