Kevin Campbell heaps praises on ‘marvellous’ Everton ace Calvert-Lewin
Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell has claimed that he hopes this season can be a turning point for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The 23-year-old has hit 15 goals in all competitions for the season this term, his most fruitful campaign for the club to date.
And Campbell is optimistic that he can build on his impressive form going forward.
Speaking on Royal Blue: The Everton FC Podcast, he said: “I would definitely hope so, I just think the criticisms were there, and rightfully so at times, because he was doing a lot of his work outside the box, remember he’s a winger by trade, he’s not really a centre-forward.
“So he found that a lot of the work was being done outside of the box, and then he found himself not getting in the box.
“Now, when he’s got a foil, when he’s got somebody to play with him, he finds himself being able to get in the box a lot more – and that’s where you’re going to score your goals as a No 9.
“You’re going to score the majority of your goals in the box, and if he finds himself in between those posts, he’s got a great chance of scoring. So, I think he’s done marvellous and fingers crossed he goes on from strength to strength.”
Calvert-Lewin has looked like a different player this season, and it’s been a joy to watch.
The hitman has really come into his own, and his stats reflect that.
As per Wyscout, his goals per game, shot accuracy, and xG have all gone up compared to his career average, while he’s also winning more aerial duels and completing more successful dribbles.
This time last year it was hard to envisage Calvert-Lewin ever getting to a point where he could consistently be Everton’s leading man, but now it feels like a really natural progression.
