‘Difficult one’ – Journalist casts doubt over Everton future of South American player

After a disappointing end to the season for Everton, all eyes will move to Carlo Ancelotti’s first transfer window in charge at Goodison Park.

Some players will need to leave, that is a given and one of those could be winger Bernard, who hasn’t excelled at Goodison Park.

LaRoma24 have reported that Roma are interested in the Brazilian, and could launch a move in the next couple of months.

Liverpool Echo journalist Sam Carroll has cast doubt over his future at the club, claiming an exit would not surprise him in the slightest.

“I also feel that for where Everton want to be, is Bernard good enough on a consistent enough basis? No, probably not,” he said on the Royal Blue podcast.

“It’s whether he gets that time next season to prove himself under a manager like Carlo Ancelotti. If he does have that quality, then Ancelotti is obviously the right man to get it out of him and obviously I’m sitting here talking about a lad who played for Brazil at the World Cup, so it is a difficult one.

“At the end of the day, the way I always think about these things when you ask these questions is, if Bernard did join Roma or did join someone else this summer, would we all be sitting here gutted, would we all be sitting here disappointed? No, probably not – and I think that probably tells you a lot really, doesn’t it?”

Like Carroll said, would any Everton fans really be disappointed if Bernard was to leave? Probably not, we haven’t seen enough from the South American.

The 27-year-old has made 27 appearances in the Premier League this season and has only shown glimpses of promise and not enough consistency that you expect from a Brazilian international.

His three goals aren’t enough, and he only averages 0.4 shots on goal per game according to WhoScored – nowhere near good enough for a winger who arrived with great promise and talent a couple of years ago.

Bernard didn’t feature against Sheffield United and only came on for 20 minutes against Bournemouth, not exactly good signs that Ancelotti wants to keep him around.
