Charlie Nicholas questions Everton squad, claims one player lacks interest under Ancelotti
Charlie Nicholas has questioned the commitment of this Everton squad under the management of Carlo Ancelotti.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that although it started well for the Italian at Goodison Park, the season will be classed as “bog-standard”.
Everton laboured to a 12th-placed finish in the Premier League, finishing with a disappointing 3-1 defeat against relegated Bournemouth on Sunday.
Nicholas questioned the effort of some of the Toffees squad, singling out Gylfi Sigurdsson as someone who lacks interest.
“I don’t know what Everton are,” he wrote for Sky Sports.
“I don’t know what their style is, what their shape is, Carlo Ancelotti is a man who should have got that embedded in them by now. It started well for him, but I look at people like Gylfi Sigurdsson and ask if they are that interested?
“I think Ancelotti will look at this team and say how much have I got? I don’t think there’ll be a lot of money there, they’ve spent big before. It’s been a pretty bog-standard season for them.”
It has been a frustrating year for the Toffees, with the FA Cup defeat against an inexperienced Liverpool side summing it up.
Take Sigurdsson for example, the Icelandic international is an experienced Premier League player but hasn’t performed like one all season.
The 30-year-old has featured 35 times but has only managed five-goal involvements – his lowest total since moving to England.
A number of players haven’t been good enough, and Ancelotti will no doubt want big money spent in order to prepare his side for next season.
