Berbatov claims Everton set for ‘big season with lots of trophies’ amid perfect PL start
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has hailed Everton for their start to the season and has heaped praise on boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Everton currently sit top of the Premier League table with four wins from four matches and have put in some very impressive performances, notably against Tottenham and Brighton.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the ex-Tottenham striker has said that the Toffees have the players and manager to take that next step and become a ‘really big team’.
Berbatov said: “They have always been a team on the cusp of being a really big team. The league is a marathon, not a sprint, but still you would have to be happy to be in their shoes.
“It would be great to see them challenging at the top, and they have the manager and players to do it. They are taking advantage of other teams mistakes, James Rodriguez is having a ball in that team also.
“Ancelotti is clearly having a great impact on the squad, the players all respect him – he brings an aura of a winner to any team. Everton will be planning a big season with lots of trophies now, and as long as they avoid a dip in form, they can be competitive.”
The Toffees are looking to improve following last season’s disappointing 12th placed finish. Results and performances improved following Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival at Goodison Park in December 2019, but not enough to merit a top-half finish.
Now that the Italian has had a summer to work on his squad and bring his own players in, we are seeing a team that is more befitting of a coach of Ancelotti’s quality. James Rodriguez has been the pick of the new signings, adding three goals, two assists and a sense of class to the Toffees’ midfield.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also been in top form this term, with nine goals across six competitive appearances. He has developed immeasurably under Ancelotti and looks well on the way to becoming a world-class striker.
Everton will look to continue their incredible start to the season when they welcome city rivals Liverpool to Goodison Park after the international break. Top of the table Toffees have a great chance to finally end their derby hoodoo and defeat last season’s champions who will be reeling from their embarrassing 7-2 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.
In other Everton news, Calvert-Lewin credits Duncan Ferguson amid impressive goalscoring form.
