Report details why Everton failed to sign Sergio Romero on deadline day
Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero believed he would sign for Everton on transfer deadline day to provide competition for Jordan Pickford, according to the Daily Mail.
Everton signed goalkeeper Robin Olsen from Roma on Monday, after being linked with a move for Romero. The Daily Mail reports that the 33-year-old’s move to Goodison Park fell through due to Manchester United’s demands.
The report says that Romerno “thought he was moving to Goodison Park on loan” but “the deal fell through when United demanded a fee”.
Everton seemingly want more competition for Jordan Pickford following the England goalkeeper’s numerous mistakes this season. Most recently he dropped the ball at the feet of Brighton forward Neal Maupay inside the six-yard box allowing the Frenchman to equalise when the Toffees met the Seagulls at Goodison Park last weekend.
Luckily for Pickford, his mistake didn’t have a huge impact on the game as his side eventually won 4-2. But he also made a goal costing mistake against Fleetwood Town and could have done a lot better to stop Grady Diangana’s effort when Everton played West Brom.
Pickford’s performances have stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the Toffees’ perfect start to the season. As it stands Everton sit top of the Premier League with four wins from four league games.
Ancelotti’s summer recruits have revitalised the side that finished in a disappointing 12th place last season. James Rodriguez has been the standout signing with his three goals and two assists in the Premier League. But Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the man writing all the headlines at Goodison Park this term, with his nine goals in six competitive appearances.
Everton will be happy that they brought in a new goalkeeper, as the man currently between the sticks looks to be the Toffees’ biggest liability this season. Ancelotti’s side will want to build on their great start to the season and competition for the number one spot can only help Pickford get back to his best.
