Everton defender major doubt for Southampton trip, full debut mooted for new signing – report

Everton defender Seamus Coleman is a ‘major doubt’ for his side’s trip to Southampton this weekend, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Coleman picked up a hamstring injury in the first half of Everton’s derby draw with Liverpool last weekend and was replaced by debutant Ben Godfrey.

Godfrey is now in line to be given his full debut when his new side take on Southampton at Saint Mary’s this weekend.

The Liverpool Echo also report that Everton won’t comment on Coleman’s injury so at this stage it is unknown how long the 32-year-old will be out for.

Coleman will be a miss for Carlo Ancelotti as he has started all five of the Toffees’ Premier League games this season and has been a part of the side that has fired Everton to the top of the league.

His injury does give Ben Godfrey a chance to show that he can be a quality addition to the Toffees’ defence following his recent switch from Norwich City.

Everton will be looking to get back to winning ways against the Saints after they dropped points for the first time this season in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend.

Richarlison will miss the trip down south after receiving a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Reds midfielder Thiago, meaning there is a space up for grabs alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Rodriguez in Ancelotti’s attack.

Could Bernard come in to make a first Premier League appearance of the season? It could be the chance he needs after being linked with a move away from Goodison Park. The Brazilian elected against a move away and instead chose to stay and fight for a place that may be available on Sunday.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are trying to offload one of their players to a former club in a bid to get him to leave Goodison Park.
