Report claims Everton chose not to sign £31.8m-rated international in summer
Everton decided against signing Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen after being quoted £31.8million (€35million) by his club, according to Marca.
The former Barcelona keeper signed for Valencia in 2019 after a three-year spell at the Camp Nou in which he only made five league appearances.
Marca are reporting that Everton were interested in bringing the Dutch international to Goodison Park this summer but they didn’t want to meet the demands that Valencia had set for the 31-year-old.
While Marca claim that Everton never made a concrete offer Cillessen, they do say that any potential Toffees bid was ‘going to be far from the 35 million euros’ that Valencia quoted.
Cillessen remains at Valencia where he is yet to make an appearance this season. He has been suffering with a leg injury which could have also impacted Everton’s decision to not make a move for the goalkeeper.
The Toffees instead signed Robin Olsen on a season-long loan from Italian side Roma in a bid to create more goalkeeping competition for Jordan Pickford.
Pickford has been heavily criticised this season after making multiple mistakes in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
He has made goal-costing mistakes against Brighton and Fleetwood Town already this term as questions are being asked about whether he is good enough to be Everton’s number one.
There is no doubt that Cillessen would have been a quality addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season as the Dutch keeper has jump-started his career at Valencia.
The 31-year-old would have the experience and quality to replace Pickford if he had been brought to Goodison Park, so perhaps it’s better for the England international that his club decided against a move for the Valencia stopper.
