Andre Gomes has ‘little problem’ as Everton’s injury list grows

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Everton midfielder Andre Gomes picked up an injury away at Newcastle as he joined a growing injury list at the club.

James Rodriguez and Seamus Coleman missed the trip to St James’ Park through injury as the Toffees fell to a second successive defeat in the Premier League thanks to a brace from Callum Wilson.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the game, Ancelotti explained that the midfielder picked up a ‘little problem’ on his knee.

Ancelotti said that “Andre had a little problem on his knee but it was nothing special, just a knock”, but the Italian did not disclose if Gomes would miss any games with his injury.

Gomes looked to injure his knee when he challenged Newcastle’s Wilson while defending a corner. The challenge was late and it resulted in a Magpies penalty that Wilson duely dispatched to give his side the lead.

Wilson doubled the host’s lead late on and a very late Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal wasn’t enough to steal a draw at St James’ despite six minutes of injury time.

The injury to Gomes will raise alarm bells ahead of Everton’s game against Manchester United next weekend as Ancelotti’s side struggled against Newcastle with the injuries the already had.

Rodriguez was a huge miss going forward as Everton struggled to create any meaningful chances against a side who were beaten 4-1 by the United team they face next up in the league. Coleman’s experience was also a miss at the back as the Magpies attack had plenty of joy running down both the left and right flanks.

Everton’s fantastic start to the season could all come crashing down if they are defeated by a Man United team that haven’t won at home this season. Hopefully, the Toffees can get their season back on track against the Red Devils with a win.

In other Everton news, Cenk Tosun has been handed a Goodison lifeline by Ancelotti.
