Ancelotti slams ‘really bad’ Everton after loss v Man United

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that his side’s current form is ‘really, really bad’ as the Toffees succumbed to a third successive league defeat on Saturday.

Everton lost 3-1 to Manchester United on Saturday as goals from Bruno Fernades and Edinson Cavani condemned the Toffees to a third defeat in three Premier League games.

Speaking after the game, Ancelotti said his side will work on the defence as it is a problem he has to solve.

The Liverpool Echo quote the Everton boss as saying, “I consider this period really, really bad, an unfortunate period. We had injured players and suspended players and I hope after the international break all the players will be back.

“We are going to work on the defensive aspect. I hope to see my team play like they did at the start of the season. We were not compact.

“We gave them the opportunity to play between our lines. We were not so focused in the box and we didn’t mark the box. They were collective mistakes. This is a clear problem and we have to solve this.”

The defeat to Manchester United followed losses to Newcastle United and Southampton as the Toffees look a shadow of the side they were at the start of this season.

The Toffees have been blighted by injuries and suspensions this season. But injured pair Seamus Coleman and James Rodriguez returned to Ancelotti’s side on Saturday and they couldn’t have a positive impact on the game.

Richarlison was still serving his suspension but Lucas Digne returned after his one-game ban and had a poor game at left-back. He could have squared the ball to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who would’ve surely converted for Everton but the defender went for goal himself and hit the woodwork.

Ancelotti had nearly a full squad to choose from against United so it is perhaps harsh to blame the defeat on injured and suspended players, most of whom were available. One thing is for sure however, Everton need to improve and they need to do it quickly.

In other Everton news, earlier reports linking the Toffees to a La Liga winger were ‘made up’ according to a report.
