Report details impact COVID-19 had on Everton matchday income last season
Everton missed out on £3.5million last season as they were forced to play five home games behind closed doors according to the Liverpool Echo.
Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic football stadiums around the country remain shut and there is currently no set date on when fans will be able to return.
The huge amount of money that Everton lost through taking no gate receipts in their final five home games of last season has put into perspective how much clubs are being affected by the pandemic.
The Toffees have already played four home games this season without picking up any money from the turnstiles and they could be set to miss out on even more money while the pandemic continues.
Luckily, Everton are fairly secure financially meaning they could still spend money this summer bringing players like Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure to the club.
The Toffees have also faired a lot better than some of their top-six rivals, as the Liverpool Echo’s report also says that Manchester United have lost £70 million due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Of course, the effects of the pandemic will be worse on clubs further down the divisions but that’s not to say that Premier League clubs aren’t struggling too.
£3.5 million is a lot of money to miss out on for any club and while the Toffees are in a better position than some, the club will still be feeling the financial pinch.
It will be a huge boost to Everton when fans are finally allowed to return to Goodison Park but it could be quite a while before that is a possibility after England entered a second national lockdown, postponing any plans to bring fans back to any football matches in England.
In other Everton news, Leon Osman has delivered his verdict on the Toffees potentially finishing in the top four this season.
