I want to be a regular’ – Godfrey states what he wants after Everton move

Everton defender Ben Godfrey has stated that he wants to become a “regular” this season, following his summer move from Norwich City.

The former York City man arrived at Goodison Park for a fee that could rise to as much as £25 million, as per The Athletic.

He has made two Premier League appearances so far, with his only start coming in the slightly unfamiliar role of right-back.

“I want to be a regular in Everton’s team,” Godfrey told York Press.

“It’s every English footballer’s dream to represent the country at senior level. I’m fortunate enough to do it at the under-21 level. It’s a great time to be a part of it because there’s actually a pathway now for young players into that senior team.

“If you find yourself playing well regularly in the Premier League for Everton, there is a chance you could get that call-up, and that’s what I will continue to work towards. It’s already a proud moment for me and my family to represent the England Under-21s but to go that bit further for the seniors would be massive.”

A naturally gifted footballer who spent much of his early career as a midfielder, Godfrey was concerted into a centre-back by Daniel Farke at Norwich.

With great recovery speed and a desire to stay on his feet, he impressed, even if he is still learning the position.

In his limited game time at Everton he has done well, especially coming off the bench against Liverpool in an unfamiliar right-back role.

The return to fitness of Seamus Coleman has seen him return to the bench though and he can now set his sights on getting ahead of Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate in order to secure a place as a starting centre-back.

Now an England regular, Keane is increasingly looking like the first choice at Everton, but Mina was recently taken out of the side following a mistake against Liverpool.

Like Godfrey, Holgate is a talented youngster who has impressed since coming into the side, but there is little doubt the former Norwich man will get his opportunities.
