‘Scapegoat’, ‘Witch hunt’ – These Everton fans leap to the defence of criticised international
Plenty of Everton fans have come to the defence of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after he was blamed by the Daily Star following England’s 2-0 loss to Belgium.
It appeared that there was little that Pickford could do to prevent either Belgium goal, with the Everton stopper even getting a fingertip to Youri Tielemans deflected shot while at full stretch.
The defeat meant that England could no longer qualify for the Nations League finals, with Denmark and Belgium taking an unassailable lead in the group.
Pickford has come in for plenty of criticism this season, some warranted and some totally undeserving, but a lot of Toffees fans seems to feel that he is now just being made a scapegoat for no reason.
So far in the Premier League this season, the England man has saved 62.5% of the shots he has faced, with rival Nick Pope saving 64.5% (via FBRef). Dean Henderson has not started a Premier League game for Manchester United.
In response to a tweet from the BBC’s Allie Hodgkins-Brown, one fan said that Pickford had no chance of saving the Belgium efforts, while another described the headline as part of a witch hunt.
Here are some of the best responses.
