‘Best I’ve seen him’ – Murphy hails display from ‘superb’ Everton ace v Fulham

Danny Murphy has hailed the performance of Alex Ibowi as Everton got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over Fulham on Sunday.

Iwobi ran riot against Fulham with the Cottagers defence unable to contain the Nigerian as he constantly popped up in the box looking to supply his teammates.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 (22/11/20, 29 mins 29 seconds), Murphy claimed that it was Iwobi’s best performance in an Everton shirt.

Murphy said, “I thought Iwobi was superb, we know about Digne’s quality on the crossing, Calvert-Lewin is on fire and Fulham couldn’t cope with them.

“They got better in the second half but both the wing-backs for Everton enjoyed their freedom because they knew they had a defender behind them to protect them.

“Iwobi, it’s the best I’ve seen him in an Everton shirt for a while. He is generally a winger and he really got some quality balls into the box.”

Iwobi did have an excellent game against Fulham and that statement is backed up by the stats.

According to Wyscout, Iwobi completed 75% of his dribbles against the Cottagers while also making six progressive runs as he tormented the Fulham defence.

The 24-year-old was deployed as a wing-back as Carlo Ancelotti tried a new system and the new position allowed Iwobi to flourish as he had the freedom to run at the Fulham defence at will without having to worry too much about defending.

This new system could be the making of Iwobi if Ancelotti uses it again in future but it is worth nothing that the Nigerian was up against poor opposition and he will have a tougher time against Leeds next week if he retains his place.
