‘What’s the formation?’ – These Everton fans are confused by starting XI v Leeds United
Everton take on Leeds United on Saturday at Goodison Park, with the Toffees able to move to third in the Premier League table with a win.
Ahead of kick-off, boss Carlo Ancelotti has picked a rather surprising starting 11, with Mason Holgate named as a captain and no recognised full-backs being included.
The absence of Lucas Digne meant that the Italian would need to make a change, while Alex Iwobi played at wing-back against Fulham during the Toffees’ most recent fixture.
Yerry Mina has been dropped and replaced by Holgate, who does have some experience at right-back, while Tom Davies replaced Digne.
Whether Everton stick with a 3-4-3 with Davies at left-wing-back or switch to a back four and playing Holgate at right-back remains to be seen.
Many had expected Niels Nkounkou, the other recognised left-back to be included, but the young Frenchman was not even named on the bench.
The response from Everton fans was rather mixed, with some congratulating Holgate on being named as captain and others questioning the absence of Nkounkou.
Meanwhile, many others were confused by the formation that Ancelotti was going to start the match with.
