‘It’s about trust’ – Exclusive: Campbell weighs in on Everton Gordon dilemma

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes that Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t trust Anthony Gordon enough after the youngster stopped getting minutes for Everton

The highly-rated youngster has made three first-team appearances this season but hasn’t featured since October’s loss to Southampton.

Campbell believes Gordon may have to go out on loan to get regular football but stressed that a loan move would be a ‘good thing’.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “It’s about trust. I think Anthony Gordon is a good player but he hasn’t got the minutes. How can you trust somebody who hasn’t been on the course?

“He might have to go out on loan to get regular football to start with. That wouldn’t be a bad thing, that would be a good thing. We know he’s a talented player, we know what he can do.

“But to put him in ahead of international players, like Richarlison, I’m not sure. When he [Richarlison] isn’t there Everton don’t win. When he comes back Everton score, Everton win, they look more of a threat. That’s not quite what Gordon is right now. Maybe he needs to go on loan to get regular football and upgrade that talent.”

The majority of Gordon’s minutes this season have come in the Carabao Cup as he started against Salford in the 3-0 win.

He was dropped to the bench for the clash against Fleetwood in the next round but still managed to get 45 minutes under his belt.

Gordon was then dropped entirely for the game against West Ham in the fourth round as he didn’t even make the bench.

Everton fans have been hoping to see more of the talented 19-year-old but with the quality of James Rodriguez and Richarlison, it is unlikely that the youngster will get a look in.

A loan move would probably be a good thing for Gordon as a successful spell at a Championship or League One club would leave him in good stead to challenge for a starting place at Goodison Park next season.
