‘Not just the hair’ – Liverpool Echo journalist gives Everton man £100m valuation
Liverpool Echo journalist Sam Carroll believes that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is worth £100 million after scoring his 11th Premier League goal of the season against Burnley on Saturday.
The England international has made an electric start to the year and is currently leading the race for the golden boot.
The 23-year-old bagged the equaliser Everton drew 1-1 with Burnley on Saturday, with the Toffees now sat ninth in the table on 17 points.
Speaking on the Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue podcast, Carroll said that Calvert-Lewin looks like a totally different player since Carlo Ancelotti became Everton manager in December 2019.
He told Royal Blue podcast: “Since [Ancelotti arrived], Dom’s just been scoring for fun. I was talking about him before and saying, at this rate, if he scores like this until the end of the season, he becomes a player who’s worth £70-80m. I think if he scores like that again next season, then that’s a player worth £100m upwards. He just looks totally different. Obviously, players mature and that’s just a natural thing.
“I was watching back those goals when we won 3-2 against Watford when David Unsworth was in interim charge and it’s not just the hair that makes him look like a totally different person.”
Calvert-Lewin has been outstanding since Ancelotti arrived at the club last season, finishing last season with 13 Premier League goals and starting this with almost as many after just 11 fixtures (via WhoScored).
Only Patrick Bamford has generated more non-penalty expected goals than Calvert-Lewin in the Premier League this season, while only Diogo Jota has taken more shots on target per 90 minutes (via FBRef).
He now has five caps and two goals for the national team and is expected to play a role in Euro 2020 over the summer. However, Everton would be loathed to lose a homegrown talent that has developed into not only one of their most important players but also one of the best strikers in the league.
Whether a bid of £100 million would tempt them is difficult to determine, but it would certainly take a significant fee to prize the asset away from Goodison Park.
