Rio Ferdinand shares ‘conundrum’ facing Everton in upcoming January window

Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Everton face a conundrum in the upcoming January transfer window as the side continues to struggle through an injury crisis.

Key men such as James Rodriguez, Allan and Lucas Digne are all currently sidelined and these injures could force the Toffees’ hand in the transfer market.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand claimed that Everton could invest more money in a bid to fix their injury woes.

He said, “What the big question is now is that the January window is coming now and we know that the owners and people who run Everton have the cash, will they smell something?

“That is the conundrum they are in, do we go for it? Do we spend more money and invest? Or do we settle with what we’ve got? Because they’re picking up injuries. That’s the problem.”

Everton are managing to deal with their injury crisis as the club is currently on a four-game winning streak in the Premier League.

The chance to extend this remarkable run to five games was denied on Monday evening after Manchester City asked for their clash against the Toffees to be postponed.

Everton recruited heavily in the summer as they spent considerable fees on Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ben Godfrey.

Spending money in January is something that the Toffees should have the capacity to do but whether it would be a wise move remains to be seen.

Carlo Ancelotti’s players won’t be injured forever with Rodriguez and Digne due back by the end of January at the latest.

Signing replacements or back up would mean that the Toffees have a huge squad that would be unable to accommodate each player’s demands.

However, if Everton do recruit it could pay dividends if the Toffees secure European football at the end of the season.

Clubs need a big squad to successfully challenge in Europe and January recruitment could be a precursor to securing a top-six finish.
