‘Fantastic for Everton’ – Exclusive: Campbell hails Sigurdsson’s recent improvement

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Former Everton captain Kevin Campbell believes that Gyfli Sigurdsson’s form has stemmed from the club’s excellent summer recruitment.

Sigurdsson has been welcomed back to the Toffees first team with summer signings Allan and James Rodriguez out injured and the Icelandic international has improved considerably.

Campbell believes that this is what Carlo Ancelotti wants as Everton now look to have a very competitive squad.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “This is the thing. You bring in Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure and all of a sudden people are stepping up.

“No Allan and Rodriguez and Sigurdsson is stepping up. This is what Carlo Ancelotti wants, a squad that is competing.

“Sigurdsson has come up trumps, he scored the winner against Chelsea and he scored the winner against Sheffield United so he’s definitely stepping up to the plate which is fantastic for Everton.”

Sigurdsson has played a major role in securing six points for the Toffees in those games against Chelsea and Sheffield United as he scored in both 1-0 wins.

These results have helped to propel Everton back into the fight for a top-four spot and the Icelandic international is currently looking undroppable.

With Ancelotti refusing to put a time scale on Allan’s absence, Toffees fans could be seeing Sigurdsson line up for their side for the foreseeable future.

At the moment this isn’t a bad thing at all with the midfielder making major improvements on his disappointing performances last season.

Ironically, it was his poor efforts last season that may have convinced Ancelotti to overhaul the midfield in the summer and this, in turn, has made Sigurdsson a better player and a more valuable asset to Everton.

Toffees fans will be hoping this rich vein of form continues for as long as possible as Sigurdsson looks to help his side secure European football.

In other Everton news, Toffees-linked Leon Bailey has put English clubs ‘on alert’, according to a new report.
