Exclusive: Campbell hails ‘great opportunity’ in FA Cup for Everton youngster Onyango

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes that Everton have a fantastic opportunity to give youngster Tyler Onyango first-team minutes in the upcoming FA Cup clash against Rotherham.

The Toffees welcome the Millers to Goodison Park on Saturday as Carlo Ancelotti looks to make a strong start to another domestic cup campaign.

Onyango was recently promoted to the Everton first team by Ancelotti and Campbell believes that the 17-year-old has a great opportunity this weekend.

Speaking to Goodison News, when asked if Onyango could play against Rotherham, Campbell said, “Why not? This is the opportunity you get to play the young players.

“He probably won’t play in the Premier League so it’s the cup competitions. It’s a great opportunity for the young man to be involved.

“Even if he doesn’t start he might be on the bench and get on. What a fantastic opportunity for Carlo Ancelotti to blood another youngster.”

Onyango has been a mainstay in Everton’s Premier League 2 side this season making 10 appearances.

David Unsworth recently spoke of his hopes that Onyango will become a ‘top young player’ in quotes from the Liverpool Echo.

These quotes came before his promotion to the first team and it now looks possible that the 17-year-old could be given minutes against Rotherham.

The central midfielder has two goals and one assist in the Premier League 2 this season as he looks to have an eye for goal despite being a defensive-minded player.

It is possible that Onyango was promoted to the first team simply to cover the current Everton midfielders in case they pick up an injury.

But there is no harm in playing Onyango in a game that Everton should have no problem winning and if he impresses then maybe he could work his way into Ancelotti’s plans.
