Everton official clears up Tosun celebration confusion

Cenk Tosun did not celebrate with a nod to a Turkish far-right group after he put the ball in the net against Rotherham, according to an Everton official.

Late in the match, Tosun thought he had won the game for Everton as he put the ball past the Rotherham keeper and he celebrated by pointing at the sky in an unusual manner.

The goal was ruled out by VAR but the celebration caused a stir after the game after it was linked with a Turkish far-right group.

A video from Sky Sports shows Duncan Ferguson answering a question about the celebration before a club official interjects.

The official says, “Just to clarify, I spoke to Cenk and he confirmed that it wasn’t that gesture so I can just set the record straight there.

“He was just celebrating and pointing to the sky.”

The controversy around the celebration has marred what should be remembered as a decent afternoon for the Turkish international.

Tosun opened the scoring in the 2-1 win with a cheeky chipped finish early in the game as he scored his first goal of the season.

This will give Carlo Ancelotti a small boost now that Tosun has found the net as he knows that he may not have to rely on Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the rest of the season.

What Saturday’s game means for Tosun on the transfer front is unknown as he has been heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park.

Ancelotti has no choice but to play Tosun if he wants to rest Calvert-Lewin due to the lack of striking options at the club.

Could we see someone come in during the January window before Tosun is allowed to leave?

Whatever happens, let’s not let some small controversy get in the way of a cup win and a goal for misfiring striker.
