Everton chief hails Lucas Digne’s ‘amazing’ recovery from injury

Everton Director of Medical Danny Donachie has hailed Lucas Digne’s amazing recovery as the Frenchman returned to the first team to face Rotherham.

Digne picked up a severe ankle injury in November and it was thought that he could be out for up to three months.

In reality, he returned after six weeks as Donachie told Everton’s official site that Digne’s mentality played a key role in the rapid recovery.

He said, “It [his First-Team return] is way ahead of schedule. It was a significant injury he suffered. He ruptured the medial and lateral ligaments in his ankle but he also had a significant fracture in his fibula.

“We’ve had players in the past who have recovered within eight weeks, and I thought that was incredible.

“But his recovery was just amazing. It’s due to a combination of his mentality, drive and determination, and the fact he’d do anything we asked him to do.”

Digne was unable to keep a clean sheet on his return to the side as the Toffees laboured to a 2-1 win over Championship strugglers Rotherham.

The Frenchman was withdrawn just after the hour mark but there were plenty of positive signs from the returning defender.

Digne completed 100% of his dribbles against the Millers, according to Wyscout, as he also made four interceptions.

The Toffees haven’t missed Digne too much as Ben Godfrey has deputised for the 27-year-old but it will be a boost to have him back available.

The games continue to come thick and fast for the remainder of the season as the club look to finish strongly in the Premier League while making a good fist of the FA Cup.

On his day, Digne can be Everton’s best player and his quick return speaks volumes about his mentality.

We are so glad that he’s back.
