‘He can do it all’ – Michael Owen praises Everton star after 3-0 win v Sheff Weds

Michael Owen has heaped praised Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as he marked his return from injury with a goal in the 3-0 win to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Toffees number nine has been out of action since new years day with a hamstring injury, after being substituted in the 1-0 defeat to West Ham.

Speaking on BT Sport 1, Owen stated his fellow countryman is improving at a rapid rate, and wasn’t surprised to see him score on his return.

“It was nice and tidy (the goal), we mentioned before how good he is in the six-yard box, he can do it all,” Owen said.

“He timed his run perfectly, got free from his man as well which is a skill in itself. It’s a good goal to get their confidence going.

“I’ve watched him a lot over the years, particularly in the U21s for England, and there’s no question that he’s improving at a rate of knots.

“He’s got some of the best movement, especially in the box, in the Premier League. There are very few players who constantly get on the end of it in the six-yard box and he’s one of them.”

Dynamite Dominic back with a bang

It was good to see Clavert-Lewin get back on the score-sheet last night in a perfect performance from the Toffees.

Prior to missing wins against Rotherham and Wolves, the striker hadn’t scored in six games in all competitions. His last goal came in the 1-1 draw with Burnley back on December 5th. This goalless run aside, he’s been on another level this season.

According to Wyscout, he’s 19th highest in the top five leagues for goals scored, level with Lionel Messi and ahead of Karim Benzema.

Of his 41 shots on goal in the Premier League, 56.1% have been on target. This makes him the fourth most accurate player in the top 5 leagues. A truly remarkable stat.

Last night’s strike put him on 15 in all competitions for Everton this season, a fantastic return compared to that of the season before.

He finished the 2019/20 campaign on 15 goals in all competitions, with 90 overall attempts on goal.

This season Calvert-Lewin has already achieved the same amount of goals in nearly half the amount of shots.

As Owen said, he’s improving at a rate of knots. The Englishman is full of confidence ahead of the rescheduled Euro 2020 coming at the end of the season.

He’ll be looking to challenge Harry Kane for a spot in Garth Southgate’s starting XI.
