Exclusive: Campbell backs Olsen to succeed in Pickford’s Everton absence

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes that Robin Olsen won’t let anyone down as he stands in for the injured Jordan Pickford in the Everton net.

Pickford missed Wednesday’s game against Leeds with a knock and Olsen played magnificently in his stead.

Campbell believes that there isn’t much between the two keepers and backed Olsen to keep performing if Pickford is unavailable for this weekend’s Manchester United clash.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “If Pickford is the 1A then Olsen is the 1B.

“He’s a very capable keeper. He’s not going to let anybody down, that’s for sure.”

Olsen made a brilliant triple save against the Whites that massively helped the Blues to a much-needed win following last weekend’s poor loss to Newcastle at Goodison Park.

Pickford looked back to his old complacent self against Leicester and Newcastle and we would’ve liked to have seen him dropped for the Leeds game even if he was available.

Wednesday’s game showed that we have a very good backup goalkeeper and if Pickford continues to make mistakes on his return then Olsen has to be given an extended run in the side.

He should start at Old Trafford too as he was very impressive against Leeds but Carlo Ancelotti’s comments earlier this week suggest that the England international will be immediately reinstated to the starting 11.

This wouldn’t be very fair as Olsen played a huge role in the win at Elland Road.

The loanee keeper isn’t just proving that he is a good backup, he is really challenging for that number one spot now.

This will either get the best out of Pickford or it could be his undoing at Everton.

In other Everton news, this defender put in a fantastic display in the win at Leeds.
