‘I’ll play anywhere’ – Everton ace Godfrey hungry for more minutes

Everton defender Ben Godfrey said he’ll do what’s needed of him after his man of the match display in the 2-1 win against Leeds on Wednesday.

The Englishman was welcomed back into the starting XI having been benched for the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at the weekend.

He slotted back into his natural role of centre-back after being frequently used as a left-back in recent months.

Speaking to Everton TV, Godfrey said he’s happy to play in any position and continue learning from his teammates. He said: “I’ll do what I need to do, I’ll play wherever.

“But it’s always good to be back in my so-called natural position, and I enjoyed playing next to Yerry.

“We had to soak up some pressure sometimes and stick together but I really enjoyed it.

“For me, as someone who’s new to the club, it’s good to learn from some of these boys as well. They’ve played at the very top and I aspire to do the same.

“Learning alongside them is really good and I’m enjoying being a part of this team.”

A fantastic prospect

Godfrey has made 16 appearances in all competitions since his summer move to Merseyside from Norwich City.

The defender, 23, was captain of his former club and led them out of the Championship in the 2018/19 season.

Since making his debut for the Toffees against Liverpool, Godfrey has been an ever-present in Ancelotti’s side. It was a surprise to see him left out of the starting team to face Newcastle.

He’s demonstrated excellent versatility whilst playing left-back during Lucas Digne’s absence through injury. A run of games at centre half could see him make a late push for the England set-up this summer.

Ancelotti’s men have some big fixtures coming up over the next few weeks. They meet Manchester United and Fulham in the league, either side of the FA Cup fifth-round tie with Tottenham.

Godfrey will be hoping to play a big part in these games, as Everton look to progress in the cup and push up the league table.

In other Everton news, Gabby Agbonlahor would take this Toffees star to the Euros.
