‘Close him down’, ‘So poor’ – Many Everton fans react to ‘Absolutely awful’ defending v Man Utd

Many Everton fans have criticised the defending that allowed Bruno Fernandes to fire Manchester United into a 2-0 lead on Saturday evening.

Just before half time, Fernandes curled home a very impressive effort that piled on the misery for Carlo Ancelotti’s side after a disappointing first half.

It was an impeccable goal from arguably the Premier League’s best player but the Blues defence left a lot to be desired.

No one closed Fernandes down on the edge of the box which is almost unforgivable considering the ability the Portuguese midfielder possesses.

Questions may be asked of Robin Olsen as well but we think it would be pretty harsh to have a go at our second choice keeper for not keeping this effort out.

The Blues defence was already looking shaky after failing to properly mark Edinson Cavani as the Man United striker opened the scoring.

All it would’ve taken to put Fernandes off is one player closing him down and maybe forcing him to pass.

Instead, the midfielder was allowed the freedom of Old Trafford to casually stroke the ball over the head of Olsen.

This infuriated many Everton fans with one pointing out we should’ve done better to mark Fernandes as he ran the show at Goodison earlier this season.

If it was obvious to most of the fanbase that the defence needed to close Fernandes down, why did the defenders not do anything about it?

Here is how some Everton fans reacted to the defending for Bruno Fernandes’ goal.

In other Everton news, this Toffees defender has been compared to Rio Ferdinand.
