‘Kenny needs football’ – Exclusive: Campbell assesses Kenny’s Everton future
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that Jonjoe Kenny’s future may lie away from Everton following the defender’s loan move to Celtic.
Kenny joined Neil Lennon’s side on deadline day to replace the outgoing Jeremie Frimpong and he made his debut just days later.
Kenny has been starved of first-team chances this season and Campbell believes that the defender may leave permanently if he isn’t getting first-team football at Everton.
Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I think Jonjoe Kenny needs football.
“He’s had a taste of playing week in week out at Schalke and he’s not getting that at Everton.
“He needs to play week in week out and he knows that. Maybe his future does lie away from Goodison Park.”
Kenny has played two full games for the Hoops in his first week at the club with his new side winning both of those matches while keeping one clean sheet.
It feels inevitable that Kenny will leave Goodison for good in the near future, whether that’s a permanent deal to Celtic or somewhere else.
He was given chances this season but on a rare Premier League start against Newcastle at St James’ Park he failed to impress as Carlo Ancelotti’s side went down 2-1.
Also, we have much better players.
Seamus Coleman, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey have been very impressive this season when they have started at right-back and with these options available there is just no room for Kenny.
This is unfortunate for the young defender but this happens in football, if you aren’t good enough you won’t play.
We all wish him the best at Celtic and hope that he can find regular football in the future either at Everton or elsewhere.
