Exclusive: Campbell backs Everton to offer Olsen permanent deal
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell claims Everton will want to sign Robin Olsen on a permanent deal this summer when his loan move expires.
Olsen is on loan from Roma and he is currently experiencing his longest run in the Everton side thanks to Jordan Pickford’s recent injury troubles.
He came in for some criticism following his performance at Old Trafford in the 3-3 draw with Manchester United but Campbell insists we will get our man.
When asked if Everton would look to sign Olsen permanently, Campbell told Goodison News, “I think so, I think he’s done really well.
“He’s been a good number two to Pickford and the team hasn’t missed a beat when he’s come in.
“That’s the sign of a good number two or if Pickford is number one, then Olsen is number one A.
“He’s right there beside him. Carlo Ancelotti wouldn’t have brought him in if he wasn’t looking for a bit more consistency in the goalkeeping position.”
Olsen has been bright in this current run in the side but he has made some errors that wouldn’t be out of place from Pickford.
At the very least, Olsen has given the England number one some competition after keeping his starting spot for the best part of three years under no threat of being dropped.
While there are better keepers than Olsen out there, we could bring him in as a player who knows the club and has a year of working with Ancelotti already.
He also seems happy to be our number two when Pickford is fit and finding a decent keeper to sit on the bench is always a challenge.
There is still the need for the club to improve the goalkeeper situation massively but for a number two, it is hard to look further than Olsen.
