‘If we’re honest…’ – Exclusive: Campbell delivers verdict on Everton squad after Chelsea loss
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes Everton have been punching above their weight this season as they don’t have a squad capable of securing a top-four finish.
The Blues were brought back down to earth with a 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge on Monday which is a blow to the club’s hopes of securing Champions League football.
Campbell admits Everton’s squad simply isn’t comparable to sides like Chelsea which is why the Blues are punching well above their own weight this season.
“You look and Chelsea’s squad and wow, they should be doing a lot better and be a lot closer [to the top] when you look at their squad,” Campbell told Goodison News.
“[Thomas] Tuchel’s come in and done a great job so far with quality players, you expect that. Everton have been doing great and have been punching above their weight if we’re honest.
“Even to be in and around that top four, they’re punching above their weight because the squad is nowhere near as good as Chelsea’s.”
We have a good squad, not a great squad.
But this is Carlo Ancelotti’s first full year in a long-term project that will hopefully see us established as one of the top sides in the country.
The fact that we are challenging for a top-four spot this season is a testament to The Professor’s managerial ability as we have very few players capable of playing for top teams.
We’ll invest again in the summer and the players who are costing us will be moved on.
We’ll sign better players who are more suited to challenging at the top and this will improve us for when we mount a proper top-four charge.
In our opinion, we’ve seen enough progress this season to prove that the future is bright for the club.
Even if we don’t get Champions League football, this season has been a massive step in the right direction.
In other Everton news, Ancelotti has a big decision to make over Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
