Everton Exclusive: Campbell insists Blues are ‘better without’ Sigurdsson

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell insists Everton won’t be making a mistake if they sell midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson in the summer.

Last week Football Insider reported that Everton will listen to offers for the Iceland international in the summer with the club ready to make a loss.

Campbell claims Carlo Ancelotti will have replacements in mind and went as far as to say Everton are better off without Sigurdsson.

When asked if selling Sigurdsson was a mistake, Campbell told Goodison News, “Not necessarily.

“Siggy’s been coming off the bench quite a bit and if you’re going to take that next step as a club, you need players who are going to be starting.

“You need players who are going to be in that team and make a difference or whenever you do shuffle the pack, the next one in will make the difference.

“Siggy’s been there a while now and the team are better without him in there so Ancelotti will recoup what he can and I’m sure he’s got a few players lined up to replace him.”

Sigurdsson has picked up four goals and four assists in the Premier League this season with his penalty proving to be the vital goal in our 1-0 win over Chelsea earlier this year.

He has performed well on occasion this season but at 31-years-old it is doubtful that he can maintain this form.

Frankly, Sigurdsson can be regarded as the Everton ‘old guard’.

One of the players who were here before Ancelotti and he has failed to show why he should be kept around.

It looked for all the world he would be sold last summer so it is something of a miracle that he is still here after his awful end to last season.

Whatever happens, we’ll be making a huge loss on Sigurdsson because no one is paying more than £5million for him at this point.
