Everton duo Davies and Godfrey receive England call-up for U21 Euros

Everton duo Tom Davies and Ben Godfrey have been called up to the England U21 squad for next week’s European Championship group stages.

The Euro finals are set to begin during the upcoming March international break due to the COVID-19 pandemic seeing the original scheduled date having been revised from June 9-26.

Davies and Godfrey have both been regulars for Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side this season, and their respective call-ups are testament to their recent form.

Everton

Godfrey joined Everton from Norwich in the summer and quickly became a vital player, with Ancelotti using his versatility to great effect, fielding him in every position across the backline.

Meanwhile Davies initially struggled for minutes but over the past few months has become a regular starter, particularly in the absence of Allan, where he has impressed in a deeper role.

Absolutely deserved

With both Godfrey and Davies being called up by England, it is testament to their terrific performance levels and mentality throughout the season for Everton.

Godfrey is arguably Everton’s signing of the season because not only is he able to play essentially anywhere that Ancelotti wants him to play, but he’s also effective wherever he is playing too. He is constantly meeting the required standard and he’s doing it effortlessly.

Davies on the other hand has stepped up and taken the opportunities given to him. Partly due to Allan’s two-month injury lay-off, Davies was brought in to plug a gap and he made those games count, and he deserves recognition for that.

Godfrey is 23 and Davies is 22, so this will likely be their final chance to feature at a tournament for England U21s.

Hopefully, they take their opportunity to play and make it count if manager Aidy Boothroyd decides to start them both, as he should.

In other Everton news, Ancelotti remains confident that JP Gbamin could play for the Blues this season.
