Exclusive: Sigurdsson plans to see out Goodison contract despite Everton willingness to sell
Gylfi Sigurdsson plans to sit tight and see out his contract at Everton despite the club wanting to sell him this summer, Goodison News understands.
Carlo Ancelotti is a fan of Sigurdsson’s ability on the ball but the Blues manager has reservations about the 31-year-old’s lack of pace and willingness to do the dirty work when the side is out of possession.
A source on Merseyside has told Goodison News that Everton want the Iceland international off their wage bill so they can free up funds to offer bigger salaries to younger and better players.
Sigurdsson earns over £120,000-a-week on his Everton contract and he knows that he will not get half of that anywhere else if he leaves the Toffees ahead of next season.
That’s why he’s ready to strap himself in for an extra year at Goodison Park, with his existing contract expiring in June 2022.
Sigurdsson will celebrate his 32nd birthday in September and has already found spots in Ancelotti’s Premier League starting line-up sporadic.
The former Swansea and Tottenham playmaker has made 26 top-flight appearances this season, scoring four goals and supplying four assists. However, out of those 26 outings, 16 of them have been starts which have mainly come when James Rodriguez has been ruled out of the action.
Sigurdsson was an unused substitute last time out when the Toffees lost 2-1 at home to Burnley in the league.
Next up for the Blues is an FA Cup quarter-final showdown with Manchester City at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.
Ancelotti has started Sigurdsson in every single cup match this season with the Icelandic ace scoring one goal and assisting three others in the 5-4 win over Tottenham in the last round of the competition
