Everton Women Expert: Defence can ‘be a match for anyone’

We’re delighted to welcome Peter MacFarlane, member of the Everton Women Official Supporters Club, as our exclusive Everton Women expert.

Everton Women were unable to beat Chelsea Women when they faced off in the Women’s Super League at Walton Hall Park on Wednesday evening.

The WSL league leaders ran out 3-0 victors, with goals from Fran Kirby, Pernille Harder and Melanie Leupolz seeing Emma Hayes’ side ease past the Toffees.

Despite the loss though, member of the Everton Women Official Supporters Club Peter MacFarlane believes that Everton’s defence is good enough to match anyone in the league.

Talking exclusively to Goodison News, MacFarlane began his praise of Everton’s defence by talking up summer signing Poppy Pattinson.

MacFarlane said: “Poppy signed in the summer and has struggled for game time, either because of the form of other players or, more recently, through injury, but she’s really stepped up over the last few games and has been superb.

“She’s a young player with a huge future ahead of her so I’m delighted to see her getting a chance and taking it.”

The Toffees are currently four points behind Arsenal in the WSL table, though the Gunners have two games in hand.

Despite the club’s inconsistent win/loss ratio this season, MacFarlane was quick to praise the qualities shown by a number of Everton’s defensive regulars throughout the campaign, singling out three of the defenders who started against Chelsea earlier this week.

MacFarlane said: “Our defensive players have really shown their quality this season.

“Meg Finnigan in particular has been incredible, and if you add to that the solid assuredness of Rikka Sevecke, and the speed and power of the returning Gabby George, we really can be a match for anyone.”

In other Everton news, Gylfi Sigurdsson is set on seeing out his contract with Everton despite the club’s desire to sell him in the summer.
