Report: Olsen unlikely to remain with Everton beyond the season

Robin Olsen is unlikely to return to Everton after the expiry of his loan spell following the recent attack at his home, according to Mail Online.

The Sweden international and his family were victims in a violent home robbery earlier this month, and the attack has understandably left the family traumatised.

The Roma loanee has since been living in accommodation provided by Everton while security is upgraded at their house in Greater Manchester.

Carlo Ancelotti explained last week [Liverpool Echo] that the 31-year old still wanted to stay despite the incident, however Mail Online report the opposite.

Olsen has competed with Jordan Pickford as Everton’s starting goalkeeper this season, with Ancelotti having opted to rotate the two shot-stoppers.

Both Pickford and Olsen have been ruled out of Everton’s upcoming FA Cup clash with Manchester City through injury, with young goalkeeper Joao Virginia set to deputise.

Everton

Disappointing yet entirely understandable

Ancelotti seemingly has his heart set on bringing Olsen to Goodison Park on a permanent basis, so it would be disappointing if the goalkeeper decided to remain away from the Premier League.

However given the circumstances it would also be an entirely reasonable move.

Jordan Pickford has not been able to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that he deserves to be Everton’s unequivocal first-choice goalkeeper, despite his recent uptick in form, and Olsen has provided him with solid competition.

Neither goalkeeper has been able to stamp their authority on Ancelotti’s team, but having two capable shot-stoppers to choose from has allowed Ancelotti to rest players when they need time to recuperate.

It remains to be seen whether Ancelotti has yet been able to identify which if either of the two goalkeepers should be Everton’s first-choice ahead of next season, but having two capable options greatly benefits the club.

If Ancelotti sees Olsen as a crucial player for the long-term then it will be a shame to see him go.

In other Everton news, Ancelotti has confirmed that Jean-Philippe Gbamin will shortly join the first-team in training.
