‘Surprise to everyone’ – Exclusive: Kevin Campbell hails Everton decision to sign Godfrey

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has hailed the signing of Ben Godfrey with the youngster enjoying an excellent debut season at Everton.

Godfrey joined the club after being relegated with Norwich last season and he has been used in multiple positions during his time at Goodison Park.

Campbell admitted that he didn’t know too much about Godfrey when we signed him but he is certainly one of our better signings this season.

“Godfrey has been a surprise to everyone,” Campbell exclusively told Goodison News.

“You didn’t know about him, obviously after he got relegated with Norwich we didn’t really see the qualities that he’s got.

“Now he’s around better players he stands out. His defensive capabilities are impressive and he’s been a good signing.

“It’s debatable whether he’s the signing of the season because Everton have had some really good ones and they’ve done well.”

Godfrey has made 21 Premier League appearances this season and his versatility has been so important to Carlo Ancelotti.

During the winter injury crisis, Godfrey played all across the backline, sometimes just in one game.

He’s excelled in every position he’s had to play even though he is a much better centre back than full back.

We fear where Everton may be in the table if we didn’t have Godfrey earlier in the season and if we secure a European finish then he has to take a lot of praise for that.

Though this season will be remembered for his dominating display in the famous Anfield victory.

He was a warrior in that game and if he can consistently find that level we will have a serious player on our hands.
